Cumberland Presbyterian Church

History

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church was established in 1852 in the steamboat port of Jefferson.   Construction of the Church structure began in 1872 in the Gothic Revival style of architecture.  The steeple was designed to have clocks on three sides.  While the Church building was under construction, the Great Red River Raft was destroyed in 1873 in an attempt to improve navigation on the Red River to Arkansas and Oklahoma.  This caused the water level in the Big Cypress Bayou, where Jefferson is located, to drop and navigation became uncertain. Many businesses and citizens of Jefferson then moved to other communities.  The clocks were not affordable so painted clock faces were used instead.

In 1989 through the contributions of many people working as a team, the Church began an active restoration of its facilities.

Dear Friend:
Jesus said,
"You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.
No longer do I call you servants ... but I have called you friends. "
Jesus is your best friend! And the family of God's people provides the way for Christians
to live out the redeeming reality that we are a congregation of friends. It is also true to say
that it is the way to live out the reality of Christian friendship, through worship, service,
Bible study, and fellowship, life touches life with Christian love.

MISSION

When we carry out our Lord's commands the family is richly blessed and the circle of friendship is made ever larger. This Cumberland family endeavors to carry out Christ's commands through ministry to every age and to every need. Blessed with a marvelous church facility, it is the privilege of this congregation to reach out in Christian friendship to people of every age and condition in the Jefferson area of East Texas.

Let all who know us and become a part of us understand that we are Family.
